The Ecuadorian Center of Reproductive Medicine owned by Dr. Pablo Valencia is the only center in Ecuador that has a Zilos Laser to be used in the embryology laboratory.

Laser-assisted hatching consists in making a small opening in the zona pellucida  (layer surrounding the embryo).

This technique was introduced in 1990 by Cohen and Cols, reporting a significant increase in implantation rate in IVF patients. The most important advantage of this procedure is to facilitate the process of embryo implantation in the uterus of the mother. The pellucid zone has important roles in fertilization and embryo protection during its development. For the embryo to implant in the uterine wall, the pellucid zone must be thin and detached from the embryo.

Several studies suggest that human embryos formed by in vitro fertilization often lack the ability to become thinner and detach from their pellucid zone. Therefore, a procedure called Assisted Hatching (AH) has been designed whereby a small opening is created in the pellucid zone of embryos shortly before the embryo is transferred to the uterus. In our Center of Reproductive Medicine this technique is performed using the Zilos Laser, the most advanced laser of its kind that offers the best margin of safety for embryos subjected to this treatment.

This technique benefits:

1 - Patients (over 35 years)
2 - Patients with diminished ovarian reserve (high FSH on day 3)
3 - Embryos with many fragments inside.
4 - Patients with several failed attempts of in vitro fertilization.
5 - Devitrified or thawed embryos.
6 - Patients who will perform genetic studies of their embryos (PGD) before being transferred.
