What risk exist?

Fertility treatment helps many women to become pregnant. But it can cause some problems.

The most serious problem is that the treatment may cause a multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets or more). There are more chances that the babies of multiple pregnancies born prematurely (before 37 complete weeks of pregnancy). Premature babies are more prone to have problems after birth such as breathing, vision and hearing problems.

Being pregnant with more than one baby may also cause problems for women. For example, high blood pressure, premature delivery, bleeding and problems with the placenta, and diabetes. In some cases, fertility drugs can enlarge the ovaries of women. The woman may feel pain, swelling, nausea and vomiting. If the condition worsens, the woman is hospitalized. Both reproductive surgery and ART may cause bleeding, infection, or damage to organs and blood vessels.
